Window Safety Week

Each year in April the National Safety Council designates one week as Window Safety Week. For 2014, Window Safety Week will be April 6th through April 12th. Window Safety Week is designed to increase awareness of the importance of windows in home safety plans, including their use as emergency escape routes. This week will also address issues of children falling out windows. You may remember back in February we shared a post about Window Safety Awareness. In honor of the upcoming Window Safety Week, let’s address Window Safety Again.

Window Safety

Window Safety is such an important topic as it can affect so many. It’s really a topic that is important to address many times, and Window Safety Week is a great reminder. To get started, there is a great Window Safety Checklist available from the National Safety Council that covers both preventing window falls and emergency fire escape plans. Preventing window falls is equally as important as using windows in an emergency.

Here is a quick Window Safety Checklist for preventing window-related injuries in the home:

  • Keep windows closed and locked when children are around
  • When opening windows for ventilation, open windows that children cannot reach
  • Don’t rely on insect screens to prevent a fall, as they are designed to provide ventilation and not to prevent falls from windows
  • Keep furniture, or anything children can climb, away from windows
  • Determine your family’s emergency escape plan and practice it regularly
  • Make sure nothing is blocking or preventing a window from being opened in the case of an emergency

Here is a great, quick Window Falls Informational video:

Every year, over 5,100 children under age 18 years of age are treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments for injuries related to falls from windows. While most falls do not result in death, those that do usually occur from great heights or onto hard surfaces. Falls from windows cause more severe injuries and deaths than any other type of fall. So it is critical for parents to understand the risk of window falls and to take proper steps to help prevent them.

Next week we’ll address Fire Safety again more in depth.
